Book Description Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from The William P. Trent Collection Works Relating to Daniel Defoe: And His Life This Relation is Matter of Fact, and attended with such Circumstances, as may induce any reasonable Man to believe it. It was sent by a Gentleman, a Justice of Peace, at Maidstone in Kent, and a very intelligent Person, to his Friend in London, as it is here worded: Which Discourse is attested by a very sober and understanding Gentlewoman, a Kinswoman of the said Gentleman s, who lives in Canterbury, within a few Doors of the House in which the within named Mrs. Bargrave lives; who believes his Kinswoman to be of so discerning a Spirit, as not to be put upon by any Fallacy; and who positively assured him, that the whole Matter, as it is related and laid down, is really true; and what she herself had in the same Words, (as near as may be) from Mrs. Bargrave s own Mouth, who, she knows, had no Reason to invent and publish such a Story, or any Design to forge and tell a Lye, being a Woman of much Honesty and Virtue, and her whole Life a Course, as it were, of Piety. Book Description Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from The Works of Daniel Defoe, Vol. 3 of 3: Serious Reflections During the Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe With His Vision of the Angelic World As the design of everything is said to be first in the intention, and last in the execution, so I come now to acknowledge to may reader that the present work is not merely the product of the two first volumes, but the two first volumes may rather be called the product of this. The fable is always made for the moral, not the moral for the fable. I have heard that the envious and ill-disposed part of the world have raised some objections against the two first volumes, on pretence, for want of a better reason, that (as they say) the story is feigned, that the names are borrowed, and that it is all a romance; that there never were any such man or place, or circumstances in any man s life; that it is all formed and embellished by invention to impose upon the world. I, Robinson Crusoe, being at this time in perfect and sound mind and memory, thanks be to God therefor, do hereby declare their objection is an invention scandalous in design, and false in fact; and do affirm that the story, though allegorical, is also historical; and that it is the beautiful representation of a life of unexampled misfortunes, and of a variety not to be met with in the world, sincerely adapted to and intended for the common good of mankind, and designed at first, as it is now farther applied, to the most serious uses possible. Book Description Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from The Earlier Life and the Chief Earlier Works of Daniel Defoe Danial Foe - afterwords De Foe - may have been born in the year 1661, in the parish of St. Giles s, Cripplegate. There is no evidence of the date of his birth beyond a passage in a pamphlet of thirty or forty pages, published by him under an assumed name in November 1727. The writer says that he is in his sixty-seventh year. Daniel Defoe died on the 26th of April 1731. He had been named Daniel after his grandfather, of whom we learn accidentally, from a passage written in 1711 in the seventh volume of Defoe s Review, that in the time of Charles the First he kept a pack of hounds, and formed his own estate at Elton, in Northamptonshire. James, son of Daniel Foe, a younger son, with steady character, found a way to success by bringing cattle from their grazing grounds to the London meat-market.
