Book Description Langley et al., New York, 1843. First edition. Two volumes, 8vo, ipp 160; 161 - 304, in original wrappers. Complete with all 24 plates (tinted lithographs) and illustrated lithographed vignette title-page, and text illustrations present as called for; with map plat. Noted on the title page in vol. 1 as "third edition," but on front wrappers reads "sixth edition." First published in 1843, the first 6 issues were all of that year. A rare issue of this book, here published in wrappers in a so-called "cheap edition" in order to place the work "within the reach of the mass." The wrapper issue also allowed the publisher to mail the work -- classified here as a periodical of "6 printed sheets" -- at a lower rate of postage. Sabin (55493) says of it: "included a valuable ethnological disquisiion, and a vocabulay of the Maya tongue, with a sketch of the grammar. This work will serve as a companion or complimentary volume to those by J.L. Stephens. Indeed, it is said that Mr. Norman was hurriedly sent to Yucatan, to anticipate the researches of Mr. Stephens." The son of a bookseller, Norman served that profession in Philadelphia and then later in New Orleans where "he was conspicuous for his philanhropy in the epidemic of yellow fever in 1841." [Appleton's Cyclopedia] A rare survivor -- OCLC only notes one holding of this 2 vol. wrapper issue. Very good set. Bookseller Inventory # 7289
