Large paper copy of the second edition, the first printed in England. Title-page printed in red and black, with engraving of the Tower of Babel; 10 engravings in text; woodcut ornaments throughout. Expert paper repair to FFEP, which bears an early handwritten notice: "Harding and Leopard's Cat. 1826. The catalogue of Enligh words (page 191 to 217) in this work seems to have been the first rudiment of the Anglo-Saxon Dictionary of the learned W. Somner. Pegge's Anecdotes; fr. 5C." Offers a history of early invasions of Great Britain, the development of the English language and surnames, as well as some early folklore -- the Pied Piper of Hamlyn, and descriptions of werewolves and the bones of a sea elephant. Bookplate of Abel Berland on front paste-down.
