Description:

Wells, H. G. THE SCIENTIFIC ROMANCES OF H. G. WELLS. London: Gollancz, 1933. First Omnibus Edition, first printing. A Near Fine copy (only a few insignificant marks of abrasion to the boards) in a NEAR FINE COMPLETE AND UNRESTORED ORIGINAL DUST JACKET (spine panel a trifle age-toned as is usual with the Gollancz yellow dustwrappers of the era, a few very tiny blemishes, very likely removed whilst the volume was being read). This very first collected appearance of Wells' most famous novels appears in an 8vo volume which is 1,232 pages in size and thrice the thickness of the average book of the period (which might also explain why so few examples are still extant and why this is only the first copy in Dust Jacket that we've ever been able to offer for sale). This edition for the masses was likely short-printed, many may have perished in the pulping drives of WW2, but perhaps the likeliest explanation for its rarity is that, by the time the reader of the period finished all eight novels, the book was probably handled to death. For today's collector who may be disinclined to spend the fortune required to put together a set of the individual first edition volumes, this first Omnibus Edition may be an answer. Ironically the rarity lies here; one could find twenty first edition copies of The Time Machine or The Invisible Man before one could find a single example of this scarce and desirable First Omnibus Edition, especially one in such superb collector's condition.
