Signature on 2 1/4" x 3 1/2" white card dated 1885. John Godfrey Saxe (1816-1887) was an American poet and humorist. He was also an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for governor of Vermont in 1859 and 1860. Saxe studied law and practiced for a while, then turned to journalism as a profession, writing poetry in his spare time. He published a number of volumes of satirical and humorous poems.
