American Neutral Conference Committee , California Branch, Signed Mediation Petition. Circa 1916. 8 1/2 X 14 inches. 1 page. The American Neutral Conference Committee was a pacifist group formed in 1916 whose purpose was to "urge our government to call or co-operate in a conference of neutral nations which shall offer joint mediation to the belligerents. Members of the National Committee whose names are printed on the petition include Jane Addams ( social activist), David Starr Jordan (Stanford University President) and Oswald Garrison Villard (writer and newspaper editor). The petition calls for the United States government to attempt to mediate a peace between W.W.I belligerents. The petition is signed by Federica Hoisholt of Berkeley, Mrs. A.W. Hoisholt of Napa and Arne Hoisholt of San Francisco. Mrs. A.W. Hoisholt was the wife of Andrew William Hoisholt (1858-1920) who served as the Superintendent of the Napa State Hospital in Napa from 1913-1920. Federica and Arne were their children.
