Description:

1st Printing. Signed. Unpaginated. Published in 1955. The author's first Limited Edition publication. Self-published, it is one of Stephen Spender's rarest titles. Limited Edition of 100 numbered and signed copies. Privately printed by the great poet and his wife as a holiday present for their friends. A beautifully produced book: Small-size volume format. Gilt softcovers with black titles pasted on, as issued. Text by Stephen Spender. Without DJ, as issued. Each copy was numbered and inscribed by the author and signed by him and his wife, Natasha Spender. Presents Stephen Spender's "Three Versions From The German". Three fresh, new translations by the great British Poet Laureate of well-known poems by the great German poets Stefan George and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who were major influences on Stephen Spender's own poetry. An absolute "must-have" title for Stephen Spender collectors. This copy is Number 66, indicated/numbered as such on the Limitation Page, and is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed by the author and his wife: "To Alan and Jennifer, With Christmas and New Year Love from Stephen and Natasha". The inscription was written and signed by the author in black ink-pen. Natasha Spender signed her own name in blue pen. As far as we know, this is the only such copy of the Limited Edition available online and despite its imperfection (age-wear on fragile cover) is still in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. It is one of a handful of copies that have survived of this gem. Spender scholars have established that very few remain. Please note: The book is beautifully produced, but also quite delicate and because of its small size, easily misplaced. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest British poets of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER STEPHEN SPENDER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). Bookseller Inventory # 1500
