Franz Boas is considered the "Father of Anthropology" and was a leading expert on Northwest Coast Native Societies. He set up the first Ph.D. Program in Anthropology at Columbia University and his students came to dominate the field for the next fifty years. His study of the Tsimshian includes Mythology, society, physical world of their society, list of proper names and place names, and comparative study of the Tsimishian culture to its neighbors along the Northwest Coast.
