La Tierra de Hotu Matu?a (nombre del primer ariki o rey que llegó a la isla) es en gran medida la compilación de todo ese paciente trabajo de rescate realizado durante su larga estadía de 30 años en la isla, y sigue siendo la principal fuente de información general acerca de la cultura tradicional rapanui en idioma Castellano. Esta edición facsimilar corresponde a la original publicada en 1948, incluyendo la totalidad de las fotografías, ilustraciones, mapas, diagramas y textos que fueron arbitrariamente suprimidas en las ediciones posteriores con el fin de ahorrar espacio.
