Description:

8vo (165 x 100mm). [viii], 212pp, [2]. Signatures: a(4); A-N(8); O(2). Turnebi’s printer’s device of caduceus on title. Woodcut chapter headpieces and ornamental initials of scrolling acanthus. Full 19th-century brown calf by Gray of Cambridge, blind-tooled, all edges red, Greek letters on title; (front board loose but present, only lightly toned with age otherwise good, clean copy). 16th-century ownership inscription of "Raimundi Pii Fichardi" lawyer of Frankfurt on title. Inscribed by "Henry Munster 1848" on front free endpaper. Armorial bookplate of Percy L. Babington (b. 1877), poet, scholar and bibliophile, "Foy est tout" (Faith is all). Attractive wide margins on this large paper copy of the beautifully printed edition of Aeschylus’ ‘Tragedies.’ Second edition of Aeschylus’ ‘Tragedies’ in Greek, following the Aldine of 1518. First printed in 1518 by Aldine, it was poorly received by contemporaries and was openly criticized by the two scholars who were to produce a much more reliable edition in 1552. Adrien Turnèbe was equally scathing of the original saying it was riddled with "countless errors and shot through with horrible gangrenous sores, and [we] could not work out how we were going to make it understandable, given the state it was in." This edition is the first adequate text of the tragedies that was made available based on more rigorous editorial techniques; ironically, after the long wait, two more editions appeared this same year. Turnèbe’s edition is widely regarded as the model for subsequent editions. It is also known Turnèbe was proud enough of his prose translation that he lectured publicly on Aeschylus. As the predecessor of Sophocles and Euripides, Aeschylus is the so-called founder of Greek tragedy. Moreover he is regarded as the most theological of the Greek tragedians. The six tragedies included in this work are the Prometheus, Seven against Thebes, Persians, Agamemnon, Eumenides, and Suppliants. The preliminaries are limited to a life of Aeschylus, a catalogue of his tragedies, and a list of characters; however, in spite of its brevity, the prefatory epistle to Michel de l’Hospital is a most useful document, because it reveals a great deal of Turnèbe’s sources. It has been suggested that while Turnèbe used only one unnamed manuscript his "method" consisted necessarily of a measured approach to correction, "not to act lightly in respect of the running wounds and the soft tumours we found there."
