Publication Date: 1978
Book Condition: Fine
Signed: Signed by Author(s)
Twenty postcards and greeting cards of Ansel Adams's work, each one typed, with handwritten corrections, and signed by Ansel Adams to Dr. Francis Chamberlain (just one by Mary Alinder, R.N., regarding Adams). Plus a printed invitation to preview the exhibition "Ansel Adams and the West" at the Oakland Museum, 14 December 1979. Beginning 8 June 1978 and ending 16 February 1983, Adams's missives to his doctor are exactly what one would expect -- promises to be good, plus updates on his blood pressure, weight, heart, and aching legs -- but in charming asides he also mentions his work and travels, makes invitations to visit, and even goes on a political (anti-Reagan!) rant, indicating that the two were not just doctor and patient, but friends. The collection breaks down as such: 3 from 1978, 7 from 1979, 7 from 1980, 2 from 1981, 1 from 1983. It is sold with 45 blank postcards of Adams's work (some duplicates, 14 distinct images). The entire collection is in fine condition. Correspondence between doctors and patients are not often found on the market. A few gems: "It is beautiful here -- waterfalls a little down, but mosquitoes are very much UP! A banner year for the little bastards!" (June 8, 1978); "Please, doctor, can I look at girlie magazines after the operation????" (December 21, 1978); "I guess the 'overhaul' put the old jaloppy back on the road!" (May 10, 1979); "I feel pretty good! Full of Beans! Leave for NY Sunday. Rather overwhelmed with the TIME story. BP was 165/55 last night and about 165/50 this AM." (August 29, 1979); "I signed over 3000 books during the trip! Right hand holding up fine. I stopped when I began signing Alfred Stieglitz, Karl Marx, etc.!!!" (September 23, 1979); "I have been checking my weigh au naturel." (December 28, 1979); "Have a tricycle, which is better than traveling nowhere indoors." (February 6, 1980); "I guess my plumbing is OK after all! I have been putting our more than I take in! You cannot deny measured facts! Verilly, my cup runneth over!! Just thought I should keep you informed." (September 14, 1980); "I understand you now go to your office only once a week. I wish I could say that for my Darkroom!" (May 14, 1981); "I continue to be busy with books, etc. I shall be 81 next Sunday; hard for me to accept!" (February 16, 1983). Bookseller Inventory # D7006
