Book Description Coward-McCann, New York, 1951. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Richard Floethe (illustrator). 1st Edition. There are not many copies for sale of this Elizabeth Goudge title. Here is the First American Edition (Coward-McCann=SD) in its original dust jacket. I've rated the book Near Fine and the dust jacket Good. The book is in wonderful condition, remarkable given the fact that it is a children's book. Take a look at the photographs. It was illustrated by the artist Richard Floethe. The covers look just about perfect. You can see the inlaid silver illustrations on the front and on the spine. There's no wear at all and everything is quite bright. The covers are spotless. The corners and the bottom and top edges show no wear. The spine ends look great. The book is very solidly bound, square and tight. The pages are very clean. No one has written their name or anything else on any page in the book. There are no markings, no creases or dogeared corners. The dust jacket can be seen in the first three photographs. It is Not price-clipped. The flaps are in very good shape. You can see the chip off the front top edge of the front cover near the middle edge. There is also a tiny loss off the top edge near the spine, also off the bottom edge of the front near the middle, and on the middle edge of the rear. There's a small tear off the front bottom edge and a larger one off the front top edge and rear bottom edge. There's some light soiling on the yellow part of the front cover and on the white rear cover. That all sounds like a lot but with the exception of the larger front cover chip these issues are quite inconspicuous and as you can see from the photographs the covers of this 65-year-old dust jacket actually present quite well, particularly given how beautiful the illustration which covers the front. The dust jacket will be fitted with a protective cover. While this book is not inexpensive it is priced considerably below the few other comparables for sale despite it being in better condition. From the dust jacket flap 'The Valley of Song is a beautiful book, flecked with humor and glowing with life, strong with the knowledge that great deeds are hard one. Richard Floethe has illustrated it with delicate and flashing imagination equal to the high demands of the story'. Bookseller Inventory # 000902

Book Description Coward-Mccann Publishers, New York, 1951. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Illustrated by Richard Floethe (illustrator). Dark Green cloth boards, a few blemishes, but overall looks nice, dust jacket not price clipped, chipped edges. The first blank page has been mostly removed, other than this the book looks very good. Content of the book. In the moment while Dame Threadgold was out of the schoolroom, Tabitha wriggled through the window, scrambled over the wall at the foot of the garden, and ran to the well at the bottom of Wood Street where she had hidden the primroses for Job's birthday. Tabitha knew she would find the old wood carver in the Yard, where work had just begun on a great sailing vessel. Buth the Yard was silent. Work on the Swan was at a standstill. There was no cloth for sails, no wood for hull and spars, no copper for Tabitha's father to hammer into sheathing in his forge and no funds to buy them. JAll the men in the village, for whom the ships they built were life itself, agreed sadly that the Swan must be broken up. Only Tabitha said stubbornly, Something may happen tomorrow. Elizabeth JGoudge tells the story of what does happen when the men and the woman permitted to enter go with Tabitha into the joyous Valley which until now has been hewr secret place. Book Description University of London Press Ltd, London, 1951. Cloth. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Spurrier, Steven (illustrator). First Edition. Maroon cover with gilt ship on front and spine title. Bumped spine ends. Internally good and clean - unusually so for this book. The djj isd faded on the spine and very edgeworn and chipped at the corners with a tear of about one inch near the front lower rh corner. But still bright and clean on the front. It is not price clipped. Original British edition with Spurrier illustrations including coloured frontispiece. This was one of Goudge's favourite books. Now regarded as too lengthy, "fay" and theologically complex for modern children, unlike the Little White Horse, it remains out of print. This is the most scarce of Goudge's children's writings. Based on the Signs of the Zodiac and Psalm 104, the Valley is that place from the words of Jesus about little children "for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven" . In the imagination of Goudge the Kingdom is a real series of places that those who become as little children can actually enter. Heaven colonises a ship building village. Predates and amazingly similar to the heaven in C.S. Lewis's The Last Battle. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 006232
