Title: THE ONLY WARTIME PHOTOGRAPIC SITTING OF LT. ...
Binding: No Binding
Book Condition: Near Fine
Original full-plate, imperial-sized albumen photograph of Lt. Gen. Richard Ewell, commander of the Confederate 2nd Corps, formerly Jackson’s command. Ewell’s only wartime sitting. The Richmond photographer Vannerson & Jones set themselves to the task of photographing Confederate generals when they came to the capital and it is likely that is the source of this photo, though there is no backmark. They are known to have made the full-plate negatives for reduction to the popular CDV size, and to have produced a portfolio of imperial views for inspection by customers who would then order the CDVs they wanted. This is likely from that portfolio which was long since broken up. Some years ago I had an identical photo of Gen. Sterling Price which reputedly came from the Vannerson & Jones portfolio. It, too, had no backmark. From patina, to the slight bit of appropriate wear to corners of the original mount, to quality of exposure, to its overall splendid condition, this photograph of Ewell is everything one could ask for. Albumen print is 6 x 8 inches, mount 11 x 9 inches. Superb. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-14144571991
