Bibliographic Details

Title: THE WHITE CAPS OF SEVIER COUNTY. A STORY OF ...

Publisher: Knoxville, Tenn.: S.B. Newman & Company

Publication Date: 1937

Binding: Soft cover

Book Condition: Very Good

Description:

Title page reads: WHITE CAPS AND BLUE BILLS. Knoxville, Tenn.: S.B. Newman & Company, 1937. 160pp. Photos, engravings. Later edition, after an 1899 printing at Knoxville and apparently several others. Original faux alligator pictorial wraps, featuring two hooded Klansmen above a printing of ‘The White Caps Oath,’ which is above a rendering of a house on fire and five armed and hooded Klansmen watching it burn. Wear to spine and fairly minor edgewear, but all quite solid. This is an interesting book, essentially a history of late 19th century gang warfare between two factions in Sevier County, Blue Bills and White Caps who the author describes as a subgroup of the Klan, the narrative written from the moralistic standpoint of the White Caps. The feminine aspect of the cover title refers to the White Caps alleged attempts to put down prostitution, which they claim was a protection racket run by Blue Bills. A fairly lengthy work made up of detail-rich stories, using real names, of mountain folk terrorized by Blue Bills. A nice item. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-14105334473
