Description:

Original boards; 4to; pp. vii, [1], 326, plus engraved frontispiece. Uncut, with wide margins. Boards rubbed, and scuffed along the edges; joitns scuffed, with mull exposed. Discreet markings (ownership signatures, bookplate) on front endpapers; some light foxing; but overall internally nice and clean. Sabin 102094. The frontispiece shows Waterton's "Nondescript Man," a hirsute creature composed of various features of man and beast. Wateron was an expert in taxidermy, and perhaps a bit eccentric -- rumored to have an entire human being preserved in his home, which nearly caused a local riot. This work provides an early description of tropical plants and animals from personal observation, species hitherto known to a small number of people in academics and museums. Travelling up the Hudson River, Waterton observed that he'd come to the wrong country to looks for "bugs, bears, brutes, and buffalo," but looked upon the Americans nonetheless favorably: Wherever you meet them, they appear to be quite at home. The immense number of highly polished females who go in the stages to visit the different places of amusement, and see the stupendous natural curiosities of this extensive county, incontestably proves that safety and convenience are assured to them, and that the most distant attempt at rudeness would, by common consent, be immediately put down." This, after visiting New York!. Bookseller Inventory # 6011
