From the Author: From The Introduction

"It is love alone that leads to right action. What brings order in the world is to love and let love do what it will. "
--Jiddu Krishnamurti

What is healing? Is it merely a physical transformation, such as when you stop blowing your nose or coughing after the typical seven days to a week that you suffer through a cold? Is it a whole body experience, such as the subtle integration that occurs in the relaxation at the conclusion of a yoga practice? Is it a sense of relief in your mind, like when you shut your eyes to meditate, the world drawing inward, stilling your senses momentarily? Is healing what actually happens when you get the test results back from your doctor that say, " Cancer Free," the imprimatur of official health listed in detail in the laboratory report numbers? It is my belief and experience that true healing is all of this and more.
I am a professional health intuitive and holistic healer. I have written this book to share my journey and inspire you on yours. I could have written this book in cookbook fashion: first chop wood, then boil water, and then peel the potatoes. But it's my experience that true healing is not a linear process. It has scenic detours, dead ends, surprise vistas, and is something that is always unfolding.
I am blessed to have both an outdoor and indoor garden. Outdoors, I raise herbs, annuals and perennials, vegetables for juicing, bulbs, roses, shrubs, trees and vines. Indoors, I primarily raise orchids, though I also enjoy a bonsai tree on my desk and a little Douglas fir that I bought one year at Target that has grown taller every year in my living room.
The process of fostering the growth of another living being--either plant or human--is a delight for the soul. Plants go through seven stages:

  • Pollination
  • Fertilization
  • Seed formation
  • Seed dispersal
  • Germination
  • Growth
  • Flowering and pollination, allowing the cycle to continue.

Many of the major stages of growth seem to be invisible to the naked eye. There are times in my garden where nothing seems to be happening. For example, I planted a perennial orchid last year in the bed just outside my studio. It was flowering purple petals when I put it in the ground, but soon the blossom faded, then the roots and stems and leaves faded. It seemed to be gone completely, but I drove a stake in the ground where I had placed it, being careful not to disturb the soil around it. I waited and then I watched. I would go out and look at the area around the stake.
At last, it is putting out three new shoots and seems to have tripled in size just in the process of resting through the winter!
Indoors, my orchids may sit for months in an apparent state of quiescence. Then one day, I go down to my studio and a bud has formed. Days later, the bud splits into two, a drop of sticky liquid appearing at the end. My excitement builds. I turned the pot toward the sun and waited. In its own good time, the bud opens, and then a true dance begins. The petals rotate, lifting their heads, turning until the entire blossom opens. After a time, the colors begin to fade slightly. Then one day they turn brown and droop and fall away.
So it is with people. We go through major stages of growth. Birth. Our first day of kindergarten, the first day at school, our first love. Off to college. First job. Marriage. Birth of our own children. Second job, third job, another career. Aging of our parents. Our children leave home. Death of our parents. Our own aging. Loss of our partner. Our own death. Our legacy living on through our children, through our work and all that we have built, contributed, and given away throughout our lifetime.
It may take years of preparation for each transition.
We may not even be ready for any of these transitions but they happen to us anyway, just in the due course of being human. We can resist the changes, or we can learn to love ourselves through every part of the process, yielding and allowing, knowing that the force that opened our embryo is still guiding us through every part of the process all the way to the end.
I notice that my clients may go through major changes. I may help them get well, overcome an illness, a loss, a job transition or a life transition. Then they may go away for years at a time, only to reappear on my doorstep at the next step of their lives, just like the perennial orchid that seemed to disappear, only to push through the soil at a greater stage of evolution.
I share my personal stories in hopes of giving you a glimpse of the way I think when I look at a person's body, when I talk to a client or proceed with a healing.
If I were going to read a book about how to make money, for example, I could read a list of rules or guidelines from someone who has found success for himself or herself by following these rules. However, I would find the story a lot more compelling if I knew the man telling me how to make a fortune had grown up living out of trailer someplace before he made his mark. Now that would be a man I might listen to quite carefully.
Despite my career as a health professional, I wasn't always very healthy myself.
The list of ailments--mental, physical, and  spiritual--that I have overcome in my life is so long that I have oftentimes said the prayer, "Dear God, I promise, next time I will just read about it in a book!"

Growing up the daughter of an opthalmologist, I was paraded to a wide variety of medical doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists. I have great appreciation for all that these well-meaning professionals. I was always a dutiful patient and did exactly what the doctors prescribed for me, as I sincerely wanted to feel better. However, it was only when I began studying and  practicing alternative healing methods that I began to experience mental and physical health on any appreciable level.

But I have a guide that has helped me through my own healing process: I rely on my intuition to guide me. In sharing with you the stories in this book, my hope is that you will enjoy the journey and, in the process, awaken your own intuitive gifts of knowing, seeing, hearing, and feeling. You can learn to use your own intuitive powers to guide yourself toward greater health and happiness.
