Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine

The first hardcover edition of Asimov's first straight mystery, first published in 1958 as a paperback original. Asimov was horrified when he picked up a copy of the paperback, which had been retitled The Death Dealers without his knowledge or permission. That experience and the somewhat tepid response to the book led him to abandon mysteries--one of his favorite genres--for many years. 'On January 18, 1968, I received my author's copies of the Walker & Company edition of The Death Dealers. Finally, after ten years, my ill-fated book had found a hard-cover home. I didn't count it as a new book, of course, even though I persuaded Walker to give it my title. Except for the title and a few very minor changes to keep the book from smelling too strongly of the 1950s, it was exactly as it had been. This time it was no failure. Walker & Company eventually sold out at least two printings.'--In Joy Still Felt, pp. 447-8. First hardcover edition (no statement of later printings). A fine copy (slight spine slant; pages tanning, as usual) in a very near fine dust jacket with the most minor signs of wear to the corners. Uncommon in this condition. Bookseller Inventory # 11918
