Description:

This is an extremely rare item: a diary kept during a mediterranean cruise on a charter steam yacht named Liberty, published anonymously, most likely in a very limited edition, for private circulation. Our investigation into the author's identity points irrefutably to Urban Hanlon Broughton (1857-1929) a civil engineer, railroad and mining executive - mostly in the united States - and later a member of parliament in his homeland England. Broughton was married to Cara Leland (nee Rogers) an American heiress from Fairhave Mass. Broughton, a personal friend of several prominant figures of British peerage and politics travels in the company of his wife, son (Huttleston, of the 1st Life Guards) and a number of freinds, among which are Lady Fremor hesketh '(an exceptionally good story-teller') and Lord Queensborough. Still, on every port the yacht parades various members of the british upper class stoping for luncheon. The Diary contains not only events but a great deal of the author's experiences in the States, where he made his fortune, and in British politics. The book is tight. The cover in blue buckram with a front cover title on a white sticker, slightly soiled, as is the front cover in general. Some chipping to the tail of the spine, minor scuffing to corners. Page edges are rough hand-cut. Some foxing, especially of endpapers; rest of interior mostly clean minimal yellowing. The front free endpaper carries the inscription: 'with the writer's best wishes for 1923' - no indication to by whom. Printed in Great Britain by T. and A. Constable Ltd. at the Edinburgh University Press. We could not find any reference to this work (nor, needless to say, another copy,) nor to another volume in our inventory, titled Desultory Notes at sea,an accompanying volume in the same vein, composed by the same author three years later aboard a different ship.
