Book Description Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran & Co. 1935, Garden City, NY, 1935. Green Cloth. Book Condition: Good+. No Jacket. Reprint; (c) 1930. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Green Cloth. Good+/No Jacket. Reprint; (c) 1930. Hardback. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 338 pages; illustrated with photographs; this is the fascinating story of Hetty Green, of New Bedford, Ct.; the greatest woman financier in the world, and the richest woman in the United States. In 1885, her worth was $25 million, at her death in 1916, four times that amount. From p. 10 of the text: "In.1885, for the information of tax assessors of Bellows Falls, Edward H. Green listed as his worldly posessions seven dollars and a watch. Mrs. Green's own explanation of their separation, made years later, was that her husband had disobeyed her in a financial transaction. .This episode (their separation, actual and financial) was the birth of a legend of fantastic miserliness that for a quarter of a century afterward kept pace with her tremendous capacity for making money. She knew how to make money but she simply could not spend it." Book condition: Book spine is faded to a grey-tan; two edges have darkened to a tan color, top edge is dyed black; end papers, and adjoining pages to the beginning of text, have scattered foxing, heaviest on the endpapers, decreasing toward the text beginning. Throughout the text, foxing shows in the margins as a light tan tone. Disregarding the cover fade and internal foxing, the book approaches VG condition. Bookseller Inventory # 002223

Book Description Doubleday, Doran, Garden City, 1935. Green Cloth. Book Condition: Good Minus. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Early Edition. This 338 page rarity is a wonder to read.i llustrations. Photo illustrated dust jacket. Later printing (first was 1930). Book has seen its better days, but its all here. Some discoloration to green boards and the original jacket is quite tattered, but in one piece. Biography of one of the most unusual and, at the time, recognizable of the great stock operators of Wall Street's bad old days of the early part of the 20th century. Hetty Green, who was probably the richest woman in America at one point, was a familiar site in New York's financial district, dressed all in black and carrying satchels containing millions of dollars in securities. Her "office" was often a spot beneath a staircase in a bank building and she rode common day coaches to and from her home in Jersey City---and left an estate worth $100 million. Read to learn and enjoy; go forth to share and enjoin. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover. Bookseller Inventory # 007478

Book Description Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1935., 1935. Octavo, green illus. cloth (hardcover), uncut, 338 pp. Very Good, with slight sunning along edges, former-owner stamp, slight toning; in a Good, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear that includes chipping. From dust jacket: From early childhood Hetty Green's ambition was to become the richest woman in America. She realized it. She realized it at the cost of comfort, love and respect. She stinted herself, she was distinctly uncharitable, and the means she employed to gain her ends brought her more than once to the courts of law, where she did not always escape unscathed. A large portion of her life she lived in a dingy flat in Jersey City. She rode in day-coaches and couldn't afford cabs. She knew how to make money but she simply could not spend it! When her daughter wished to marry, Hetty insisted upon her prospective son-in-law signing a waiver disclaiming all rights to any money from her. She was supposed to have left an estate of over $100,000,000, of which $9,000,000 was known to have been in cash. Of one trust fund which was distributed upon her death there were $1,478 inheritors. But not one cent did she leave to charity! A dowdy, stern, unlovable, unlikeable, even -- in the eyes of some -- disreputable old woman, but unique. She achieved her ambition. The story of how she did it makes fascinating reading. New York, Wall Street, Americana, Biography. Bookseller Inventory # 2612qs
