Book Description P.F. Collier., New York., 1880. Hard cover. 2 volume set. Copper pebbled cloth over boards. Ornately stamped titles and cover decoations in gilt and black. 26 cm. 1033 & 931p. 40 illustrated plates, various artists, in each volume. 3 gilt page block edges. Two Volumes: Irish author and physician Charles J Lever (1806-1872) began in 1833 to publish stories in the Dublin University Magazine, with his character Harry Lorrequer, in book form by 1839. A keen observer, and rascally with early writings, he was a prolific author, inspired by his own extravagant speding style. Early years he traveled aboard an emigrant ship to Canada, and later toured and lived in parts of Europe. Never having been to battle, his scenes in the 2 other V. I books are considered among the best written. Heavy volumes with clean interiors, the novels have a 2-column format for easier reading. Illustrations: Martin; Laurer; ML Flanery; and VL Kingsbury; JJ Little & Co. of New York printed these volumes; The Electrotype Company handled the drawings. Each volume's frontispiece is protected by tissue. The wikipedia free online encyclopedia has engaging biographical notes about Lever. Very nice front covers. Very good. No dust jacket. Few blemishes; no damp staining. Gilt intact. Light spine fade. Minor rubbing to spine ends, corners, through material slightly on 3 of 8 corners. Almost on a few others. V. I, back cover mottling, long ago damage. V. II. Bookseller Inventory # Alibris.E0080003635
