Synopsis:
In Britain, works of art in public spaces, whether for the high street, main square, or in front of office buildings, have often been regarded more as satisfying oligarchical egos than as enhancing public life. Attitudes have changed, however, and a new generation of artists, attuned to the idea of art as "installation", have responded to a variety of exciting opportunities in the last ten years. This publication documents 20 projects fostered by the Public Art Commissions Agency in Britain between 1987 and 1997, showing not only the finished work but artists' original proposals and briefs, the works in progress, and alternative designs submitted. Mel Gooding's essay surveys and pushes forward a remarkably volatile debate about the meaning of "public" art. Major contemporary artists and architects whose works are featured in the book include Anthony Gormley, Wendy Ramshaw, Patrick Heron, and Anthony Caro.
