Divided into two sections, this book provides the reader with a critical interrogation of dominant theories and methodologies, and thought-provoking analyses of conversational data. In part one, psychological, feminist and positivist perspectives are discussed and a new approach is proposed based on the synthesis offeminism, psychology and discourse. In part two, examples of talk about rape are drawn from everyday discussions between men and women and from television chat shows, providing innovative empirical analyses of everyday accounting practices and common explanations for rape. Finally, the authors demonstrate the potential for the application of their approach in both professional and academic contexts to promote attitude change.
