Synopsis:
This innovative study, commissioned by Governor Mario Cuomo, examines the economic and environmental future of eastern Long Island, including the towns of Southampton, Riverhead, East Hampton, Southold, and Shelter Island. Developed as a paradigm for the interaction of a local community with state government, the report was approached with one goal in mind: to strengthen the East End economy without adversely affecting its environment.
The 4-member volunteer task force, the first of its kind in New York State history, included public officials, farmers, bank presidents, fishermen, environmentalists, motel and marina operators, vineyard and restaurant owners, and real estate brokers. After five months of intense work they made 44 specific recommendations covering the agricultural, fishing, winery, and recreation/ second home industries, which are the backbone of the rural East End economy. The complete report was delivered to the Governor on November19, 1993. This is the only full-length publication of the report in book form.
