Synopsis:
From the Late Fifteenth Century to the Mid sixteenth century, maps moved from being a specialized tool of the navigator or scholar or an official communal artifact to becoming part of everyday. This book (based on Professor Woodward's 1995 Panizzi Lectures at The British Library) traces the trade in maps that grew up in Florence, Rome and Venice and examines the roles of authors and engravers, printers and distributors, and patrons and consumers in the map trade, demonstrating map themes common to the history of cartography and print history.
