Nature: In the works of Anton Josef Trcka nature is picturesque, an embellishment atmospherically enhancing his portraits. In Edward Weston's work it appears in its most basic, purest forms, as both reality and its metaphor. And for Helmut Newton nature is the hyper-real backdrop against which he stages the pictorial worlds which accompany and pursue us today. Body: Trcka uses the body as a vehicle for a new expressiveness, a new gesture, a new image of mankind, which at the turn of this century could only be created by means of a photography both so close to, yet so remote from reality. For Weston the body is pure form, one of the world's primordial forms, an abstract representation of human, physical existence. And Newton: here bodies are creations invented by the director behind the camera, manifestly rooted in reality, but nevertheless vigorously detached from it for the sake of art and artificiality. The Artificial of the Real is about the art of perceiving reality and representing it. Three photographers show how human beings have experienced themselves in their world at different moments during this century. This third and culminating volume in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts' outstanding series on Edward Weston (1886-1958) examines Weston's role in the modernist movement. Comparative illustrations of work by Picasso, Brancusi, O'Keeffe, Pollock, and other artists are included to provide a deeper understanding of these influence's. Following an introduction by Theodore Stebbins, three sections of photographs with accompanying essays demonstrate the entire range of Weston's work: still lifes, work from the Mexican period, his landmark work with shells and peppers, small-format portraiture and fragmentary nudes, the classic 1930s series of nudes and dunes, and his late, abstract landscapes. This catalogue features many previously unpublished photographs from the renowned Lane Collection. Vintage prints -- all printed by Weston himself -- were used to create the exquisite tritone reproductions in this masterful book.

Three generations of American photography - by a family that, like no otber, has influenced the history of international photography, the photographic scene around the world, and its technical perfection. Edward Weston, the father of Cole and the grand-father of Kim, has become a legend as a photographer. In the early twenties he had already created a sensation with his soft, clay-colored studies whose artistic subject matter reminds one of the "Photo Secession" founded by Alfred Stieglitz in 1902. Edward Weston's purist studies of bodies, of landscapes, of fruit, vegetables, and other commonplace things propagate the pure, unmanipulated photograph with a tendency towards abstraction. Joint experiments with the new developments in color photography helped Cole Weston to realize quickly that color afforded him new lighting possibilities. It gave him the possibility to create his own identity and to step out of his father's black and white shadow. Cole Weston perfected his work to such an extent that today he is known as a pioneer in the field of artistic color photography. Kim Weston has broken with the Weston tradition of objectivity. His studio work is always staged and recalls a style characteristic of the surrealists in the twenties and the thirties. The black and white scenarios have an allegorical character; they comment on the human society and the rat race of modern times so that they almost form an antithesis to the landscape photography of his father.
