This book, first published in 1983 as A Goodly Heritage, traces the history of Jane Austen's family from her ancestors in Kent during Elizabethan times to the Leighs. The various members of her immediate family are covered in detail -- her parents, her brothers and her beloved sister, Cassandra. The book also describes the circle of Warren Hastings, and her aunt Mrs. Leigh Perrot, who was nearly convicted of stealing and transported to Botany Bay. The author has made considerable use of the Austen Papers to draw together little-known pieces of information together with the more familiar details to give us an entertaining and informative portrayal of the Austen family.
