Synopsis:
Best known for his invention of the mobile, sculptor Alexander Calder also created a series of gigantic outdoor sculptures called 'stabiles.' The first of these monumental works, 'Teodelapio,' was built for a 1962 exhibition in Spoleto, Italy, and later given to the city. Standing over 60 feet high and spanning the roadway, it dominates the intersection where it stands. This fascinating book traces the history of 'Teodelapio' from Calder's first ideas for large-scale works in the 1930s up to the difficulties surrounding construction of the piece. Built by a Genoese shipbuilder, it was a tour de force of engineering.
