Synopsis:
This fresh approach to the great artistic legacy of European artisans ranges from the anonymous craftsmen of the early Middle Ages to the celebrated designers of the Bauhaus in the 1920s and features a variety of works which represent the entire range of the decorative arts--ceramics, furniture, glass, ivory, and silver to name a few. The text and illustration in the book complement each other in telling the story: the reliquary of an early medieval saint opens a discussion about artisanship in the age of faith; three outstanding examples of gold and silver testify to the tradition of virtuosity among English goldsmiths; and the similarly lilting curves of a vase, a side chair, and a porcelain centerpiece inspires a chapter examining the spirit of the French Nouveau movement.
