Czech-born Canadian artist Jana Sterbak (b. 1955) has shown extensively and internationally, and uses diverse media -- sculptures, installations, photography, and video documentation of her performance -- to explore the relationship between the psychological and physical self. This book documents Sterbak's ingenious work (one piece is a bed made of bread, in another the artist morphs into a moth), and is an important testament to her growing importance.

Born in the Lebanon, Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum was exiled to London, where she has lived and worked since the mid 1970s and where, in 1995, she was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize. Through performance, video, sculpture and installation she creates architectonic spaces which relate to the body, language and the condition of exile. One of her most spellbinding and best known works is a video installation titled Corps etranger, where the spectator enters a small pavilion and takes a visual journey through all the orifices of the artist's body. Such works combine states of emotion and longing with the formal simplicity of Minimalism, creating powerful evocations of displacement, denial and otherness. Hatoum's many international exhibitions include the Centre Georges Pompidou, in Paris (1994); her work tours extensively to museums throughout the United States in 1997. The distinguished British critic Guy Brett, explores key themes around a sense of place, the body and communication which emerge from Hatoum's range of work. The artist describes a chronology of practice in conversation with Michael Archer, writer, curator and co-founder of London's Audio Arts sound archive. Catherine de Zegher makes a complex and provocative analysis of Recollection, a work she commissioned for a sixteenth-century beguinage. Hatoum has chosen a text by the influential Palestinian author Edward Said as well as a statement from the noted Italian post-war sculptor and performance artist, Piero Manzoni. The book also includes Hatoum's own notes, statements and previous interviews.

This comprehensive catalogue traces the career of Cindy Sherman, examining her achievements as one of the leading American artists of our time. By exploring the myriad constructions of female identity and the body in our culture, Sherman imitates and confronts assorted representational stereotypes, becoming for many an icon of the contemporary concerns of feminism and postmodernism. Essayists Amada Cruz, Elizabeth A. T. Smith, and Amelia Jones offer keen insight and observations from several distinct vantage points, demonstrating that Sherman's work is a lens through which to view contemporary art and its ongoing concern with the profound issues of the structures of the self. More than 200 images show the breadth of Sherman's body of work, from the Untitled Film Stills of the 1970s to series such as Centerfolds, Fashion, Disasters, Fairy Tales, and History Portraits, as well as photographs influenced by surrealist artists. Also included are intriguing excerpts from Sherman's notebooks, selections from her contact sheets, and numerous Polaroid studies, all of which shed light on the artist's process.

Negotiating Rapture: The Power of Art to Transform Lives

Ill.) Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago

Publisher: Univ of Chicago Pr
Publication Date: 1996
Binding: Softcover

Conceived as a series of journeys akin to those of saints or shamans, "Negotiating Rapture" brings together the work of Francis Bacon, Joseph Beuys, James Lee Byars, Lucio Fontana, Shirazeh Houshiary, Anselm Kiefer, Agnes Martin, Bruce Nauman, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, and Bill Viola. These artists are exhibited together in order to reveal their diverse expressions of a shared longing: the basic and enduring human urge to transcend the ordinary and experience thesublime.Juxtaposed with a range of works by Old Masters and examples from architecture, literature, and anthropology, the works in "Negotiating Rapture" show how artists, as creators, move beyond common experience to a state approaching religious ecstasy and how we, as viewers, can in turn discover a deeper involvement in our own humanity. Major essays by Homi K. Bhabha, Georges Didi-Huberman, David Morgan, and Lee Siegel, as well as a series of focused contributions by Yve-Alain Bois, Wendy Doniger, Kenneth Frampton, Martin E. Marty, John Hallmark Neff, Annemarie Schimmel, and Helen Tworkov, consider how rapture resonates both in a cultural context and within the experience of a single human being. A"Travel Guide to Negotiating Rapture," written by curators Richard Francis and Sophia Shaw, explores how each artist in the exhibition has sought to define rapture and, by guiding the viewer/reader, initiates scrutiny of transformative experiences.
