For the past decade Laura Volkerding has crisscrossed France to photograph the wood, stone, and metal artifacts of a craft tradition that legend holds dates back to the construction of Solomon's Temple. Volkerding visited the workshops of three artisans -- stone carvers, marble cutters, wood joiners, and metalsmiths -- and created beautiful, atmospheric photographic meditations on the objects that fill the work spaces, and on the textures and details that are revealed under the effect of natural light. Capturing the reverence for tools and creation, the meticulously composed images dwell on the timeless beauty of tools, fragments of works in progress, and aging reference drawings hanging on the walls.
