Christo's vision--to create public art that dramatized the relationship between land and water--was realized in May, 1983, when he surrounded 11 islands in Miami's Biscayne Bay with 6.5 million square feet of pink woven polypropylene fabric. The only complete record of the project, Surrounded Islands is a part of the project itself and the design and layout are Christo's. With an introduction and picture commentary by art writer David Bourdon and an essay by art historian Jonathan Fineberg, this book will stand as a major work in contemporary art.
