Synopsis:
For the first time the extraordinary richness and variety of the art of the book in Ireland during the last 500 years is revealed. The decoration of both manuscript and printed book, including calligraphy, illustration, typography, and especially binding, is explored. The survey begins with the Gaelic scribal tradition in the 16th and 17th centuries, moving through the development of printing in the 18th century and the consequent need for engravers -- particularly illustrated by elegant Rococo title pages from the second half of the century -- and the Celtic Revival style of the 19th century, to today's artists who put the art of the book in Ireland firmly in the mainstream of international modernism.
