Marcel Duchamp left behind a large volume of correspondence, more than a thousand documents that form a valuable source for our knowledge of the artist's personality and work. In his letters, Duchamp talks of his latest plans and works in progress. He discusses important projects, including the "ready-made" -- a concept that was radically to change the course of 20th century art. Once sending a series of connecting postcards to his next-door neighbors, Walter and Lou Arensberg, Duchamp's creative use of the postal service within the realm of artistic activity can be seen as a precursor to mail art. This book contains selected correspondence to many of his friends, including: Francis Picabia, Alfred Stieglitz, Juliet and Man Ray, Beatrice Wood, Constantin Brancusi, Jacques Doucet, and Katherine S. Dreier. Noted art historian Francis Naumann devoted twenty years to assembling all traceable letters, translating them and annotating them in Affectionately, Marcel, Naumann also focuses on the historical context and provides a detailed introduction to each correspondent.
