Synopsis:
Best known for his political caricatures, it is in his less well-known drawings and watercolors that Honorý Daumier most clearly emerges as an artist of exceptional genius and power. In Daumier Drawings, works are grouped into six sections--heads and figures, traditional figure compositions, scenes of contemporary life, portrayals of lawyers, depictions of street performers, and Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Five essays discuss aspects of Daumier's work as a draftsman, such as his individual style, the iconography of his drawings, and the interrelationship among drawing, sculpture, lithography, and painting.
