Dan Graham is among the most influential of the Conceptual artists who emerged in America during the mid 1960s. A pioneer in performance and video art in the 1970s, Graham later turned his attention to architectural projects designed for social interaction in public spaces, among them THE CHILDREN'S PAVILION (1989) with Jeff Wall. Writing has always been a major aspect of Graham's work. His texts range from early Conceptual art pieces inserted in mass market magazines, to writing on his fellow artists, to analyses of popular culture, from Dean Martin to the post Punk era. Well known also among architects and urban theorists, during the 1990s Graham has been offered major public commissions throughout North America and Europe.
London based curator Mark Francis discusses with the artist how his public participation based work has evolved. Brussels based critic Birgit Pelzer draws on her extensive knowledge of Graham's work and writings. New York based architectural theorist Beatriz Colomina focuses on Graham's ALTERATION TO A SUBURBAN HOUSE (1978). The artist has chosen an extract from the science fiction novel UBIK by Philip K Dick, whose writings were a formative influence. A substantial Artist's Writings section, key to understanding Dan Graham, complete the book.

The California Landscape Garden: Ecology, Culture, and Design

Mark Francis; Andreas Reimann

ISBN: 9780520214507
Publisher: Univ of California Pr
Publication Date: 1999
Binding: Hardcover

The beauty, resources, and natural processes of the California landscape are brought to the home garden in Mark Francis and Andreas Reimann's fine testament to ecological gardening. The authors connect history, culture, region, and design to help us understand how California and its human population have evolved historically and how individuals today can make a difference in the state's future in their own backyards. The authors' goal is to bring the history of the California garden up to date with the ecological and cultural concerns of our time. Francis and Reimann use California's natural beauty and habitat as a starting point for inspiring Californians to see their gardens as extensions of the surrounding landscape. They provide essential information on native plants and wildlife, ecology and bioregionalism, landscape history and design concepts, as well as numerous examples showing how to integrate environmental principles in one's garden. Landscape meaning and regional thinking are an important part of an ecosystem approach to home gardening, say the authors. By observing nearby native or naturalized environments, including vacant lots and abandoned property, one learns a good deal about local plants, wildlife, and other elements that can be incorporated into an ecologically sensitive garden. Yan Nascimbene's exquisite color illustrations perfectly capture the authors' sensual vision of an environment different from gardens commonly featured in gardening books and magazines. Photographs illustrate the designs of many of the best landscape architects working in the tradition of the California landscape garden, including Ron Lutsko, Topher Delaney, Owen Dell, Ann Christoph, and Rick Fisher. This is a book for anyone seeking a garden philosophy that is environmentally sensitive, and even experienced home gardeners, landscape professionals, and horticulturists will find new and useful material here.

Public Space

Publication Date: 1993
Binding: Hardcover

This book reveals the social basis for public space use, design and management. The authors--an architect/environmental designer, a landscape architect, an environmental psychologist, and an open space administrator--offer a well-integrated perspective of how to integrate public space and public life. They contend that three critical human dimensions should guide the process of design and management of public space: the users' essential needs, their spatial rights, and the meanings they seek. To develop and explain these three dimensions, the authors draw on the history of public life and public space, evidence from recent social research, and a series of original case studies, all amply illustrated.
