Synopsis:
Apollinaires most famous prose work (1915), an absurdist but also tragic autobiographical novella, recounts the life and death of Croniamental, the worlds most celebrated poet. Matthew Josephson, who in the 1920s introduced the European avant-garde to the U.S. via his archtypal small magazine, Broom, was in Paris after World War I and befriended Apollinaire's circle (his autobiography is titled, "Life Among the Surrealists"). Among his most ambitious projects was this translation published by Broom in 1923 in a limited edition of 1250, copies of which now trade hands only via rare book dealers. The translation-direct, frank, and fresh-is an artifact of literary history as well as a superb rendition of Apollinaire. This is its first reprinting, a photo repro of the lovely original.
