Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum has worked in the realm of performance, video and installation art since the early 1980s. Her works express a dramatic urgency to investigate the theme of identity. Hatoum focuses principally on the body, her own, which becomes the protagonist of her performances, videos and installations. Born in Beirut in 1952 and now working in London, Hatoum has received international critical recognition and has exhibited her work widely including at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; the New Museum, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, among others.
