Synopsis:

Emerging Urbanity examines some of the largest and most anbitious urban projects in the world today. These projects exist in response to the desires of their respective governments to engage more fully in the global economy. They are an essential aspect of a city's global infrastructure and in this sense are the most important urban projects. While other regions of the world have shown the desire to capture larger shares of the global economy through the construction of urban projects, the Pacific Rim is unique in the scale and the number of such projects.
The synergy of the Asian Miracle created an unpresedented climate of confidence about the future of the Pacific Rim. This confidence manifested itself in both tremendous economic development and urban growth. Emerging Urbanity explores the ascension of the Asian dragons and examines the results of this on urban form. The urban projects examined are but one aspect of a much larger urbanization drama unfolding in cities throughout thePacific Rim. However, unlike the multitude of separate policy, land use, development, design, infrastructure, transportation and economic decisions that combine to create the urban form of a metropolis, these projects rather are defined presentations of an urban vision, an idea of a city. Emerging Urbanity ponders the implications of these urban projects for the future of the urban form.
