Synopsis:
While his reputation as a Dadaist pioneer is by now well established, his later work, from the 1930's onward, remains largely ignored. This book is the first to systematically document Picabia's final period, and the timing could not be more appropriate: for, while these works, with their kitschy qualities, have embarrassed the purists among Picabia's many admirers, they seem in retrospect to foreshadow much of the art of the self-consciously ironic 1980's. It is therefore fitting that this beautifully illustrated book is able to both challenge our assumptions about one of the legends of modernism and stand on its own as an important revision to the artist's oeuvre.
