The Second Edition of this popular introduction to a complex topic has been extensively revised and updated. It incorporates the wide range of contributions to debates which have emerged since the first edition was published in 1993. Although many of the recent views assert that 'class is dead', the book argues that class is very much alive. It examines critically 'postmodern' theories of 'post-class' societies and the most recent contributions of quantitative sociological approaches such as those of Goldthorpe and Wright. It explores the contemporary increase in the extent of social and material inequality at length. It studies gender and the feminization of the middle classes, the significance of recent changes in work and employment, consumption, and citizenship.
