This book provides, for the first time, a history of childhood in Anglo-Saxon England. The author draws on a wide range of sources -- archaeological, documentary and anthropological -- to illustrate all aspects of a child's life from infancy to adolescence. Diet, disease, family structure, legal rights, burial rights and the literary idealization of children are examined to establish the shape of the Anglo-Saxon family and the place of the child within it. A number of intriguing and important questions are asked.
