Synopsis:
This book presents the 13 outstanding watercolors of major monuments in Paris, commissioned by King Louis Philippe and bound into a refined album as a gift to the Prince of Prussia in 1837. Now kept in Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin, these works have never before been published. The artist, Felix Duban, was a major architect of nineteenth century France. Born in 1798, he supervised the restoration of the Saninte chapelle, l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Louvre and is considered the inventor of the Napoleon III baroque style. Duban chose the 'new monuments' of his time - Arc de Triomphe, Place de la Concorde, Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Madeleine church - and presented them in extraordinarily decorative color frames. The sophisticated presentation of this book has preserved the spirit of the nineteenth century royal albums and Sylvain Bellenger provides a wonderful introduction to a very special romantic style of decoration and architecture.
