Synopsis:
Tom Wesselmann ranks alongside Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and Claes Oldenburg as one of the leading figures of American Pop Art. Born in 1931, Wesselmann was working primarily on collages by the '50s, using found objects and elements from the world of advertising. In 1959 and 1960, he created a series of small-scale works from which he later derived a series of nudes as the basis for his 1961 series 'Little Great American Nude' and 'Great American Nude.' By the early '80s, Wesselmann had begun to concentrate on his 'Metal Drawings' and 'Metal Paintings.' Cut from aluminum or sheet steel, either mechanically or by laser, they translate the fleeting impression of his sketches and drawings into garish three-dimensionality. This retrospective presents 100 of his major works, including several that have never been exhibited.
