Synopsis:
The volume traces the interesting and diverse evolution from the classicism of the 19th century to the contemporary debates which consider architectural production outside the common centers of discourse. It begins with the latest phase of neoclassicism and its final dissolution into a mild and discrete eclecticism at the beginning of the century. During the mid 1920s a demand for "Greekness" -- a return to the roots -- emerged in Greek cultural life. The traditionalist movement with its emphasis on simplicity sincerity and geometrical harmony paved the way to a certain extent for the welcome reception of the modern movement. Following World War II a wave of young rationalist architects managed to restore modernism, while certain worthy attempts focused on the genius loci. Since then the Greek architectural evolution and relation to international currents has always had an unmistakably regional character frequently, however with buildings of the highest quality. Greece 20th-Century Architecture includes in-depth information on a great number of projects providing a visually and theoretically sound account of the top-quality architecture of this country.
