10 Books You Can’t Live Without

March 1st is the 10th Anniversary of World Book Day. The Web site says the event is intended to promote “the enjoyment of books and reading.” One of the fun promotions they’re doing is for the Ten Books You Can’t Live Without. Participating is easy - you just enter a few demographic details and then your 10 favourite books. (Signing in to your LibraryThing account and sorting your books by top-rated makes this even easier.) They’re announcing the compiled list of Top 10 Books on March 1st - I wonder how many Harry Potters make the list?

Here are the books I added, in no particular order:

Of course, as soon as I submitted my 10 I thought of about five others I love even more.

I haven’t read any of your Top 10 besides “The Stand,” which was an absolutely excellent book. I’ve seen a few of the other ones at Borders, though, and now maybe I’ll just have to pick up one or two of them. I think books are about one of the last things I buy that I take people’s recommendations into account when deciding what to purchase.

A list which contains Remains of the Day, Memoirs of a Geisha and also a Stephen King is eclectic indeed! How did Mr.King get in there?

Hi Carlton Harold - I don’t think it’s too suprising that I’ve included Stephen King on my list. I love books with a good story, and with a well-formed voice (which is why I loved Remains of the Day). Stephen King is a master of creating good plot and real characters; my top 20 would probably include Gerald’s Game too (and The Cantebury Tales and Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure!).
