Why Do We Read Science Fiction?

In working to build the newly launched Science Fiction and Fantasy room, I came across a lot of interesting tidbits and articles. One such thing was over at the Intergalactic Medicine Show (great name btw) where Carol Pinchefsky asks Why do We Read Science Fiction?

Pinchefsky wonders if there is something inherent in the personality or the upbringing of science fiction readers that predisposes them to seek out that type of material. It’s an interesting thought, and likely has some weight — the experiences of our lives will help shape the experiences we seek out.

I find I am drawn to science fiction / fantasy / specaulative fiction reading (and yes some of the traits listed in the article apply to me), but I couldn’t say why … and for every sf/f type of book I read I feel the need to temper it with a non-fiction book - a treatise of environmental policies, historical food books or hard science theory.

And you? Why do you read science fiction?
