Moloka’i Recommendation

Sometimes a book is so good you want to tell everyone to read it. Our last Avid Reader Book Club pick, Alan Brennert’s Moloka’i, is one of those.

I really enjoyed the book, and was excited to see the great response from other book club members. Here’s a sample:

  • I totally enjoyed this book. It’s the kind of book that stays with you, and says WOW! -zzzangel
  • Of all the books I have read in this book club over the last year, this is my very favorite. -dreamer51
  • I had purchased this book in anticipation of commenting and reading with the group. But things got quite busy and I began reading it after the date you had all finished. The book however was sitting there so I lamely picked it up not expecting much (I had not read any comments on it as yet) and in the first page I was hooked and reading it and losing all track of time. I consider this book to be a masterpiece. -Teoslola
  • This is one of the best books that I have read this year. -WeeWilly

Moloka’i is the story of Rachel, who’s 8 years old at the start of the novel, and her experience with leprosy on the Hawaiian islands in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  It’s a powerful tale told with hope and beauty beneath the shadow of death and struggle to live a normal life.  If you’re looking for a moving piece of historical fiction, I highly recommend it.

We’re currently reading Louise Murphy’s The True Story of Hansel and Gretel for the Book Club. It’s tough to follow Moloka’i, but this twist on the H&G fairy tale set in WWII Poland is also a great read.
