Will Self and reading Eagle of the Ninth

Bookseller PhotoAuthor Will Self is interviewed by The Guardian. I’m glad to hear that he’s reading Rosemary Sutcliff’s Eagle of the Ninth to his nine-year-old daughter. I read that book as a child - I think I was around 10 or 11 - and I loved it. It’s a great story of the Ancient Britons, Boudicea and her uprising against the Roman invaders.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview with a typical Will Self comment….

In your line of work, you spend much of your time alone. How do you survive?

Rituals. Smoking - pipes, cigars, special brands, accessories, the whole bollocks. Coffee, tea, strange infusions - I have a stove on my desk. Fetishising typewriters, pens, etc. Overall, though, I have a healthy appetite for solitude. If you don’t, you have no business being a writer.
