Book prices in Canada
Our local paper, the Victoria Times-Colonist, quite rightly asks this morning why books are more expensive in Canada than in the US. The Canadian dollar (aka the Loonie) is almost at par with the American dollar and has been so for a long time now, but book prices don’t reflect these economics.
Cruise through the bookstore, pause to check out the latest Harlan Coben hardcover whodunit. Hmmm, here’s the real mystery: The dustjacket lists the price at $26.95 US, but $33.50 Cdn.

I’ve been on a bit of a book-buying hiatus for this very reason - sadly, it occurred to me today that an awful lot of the books on the store shelves were probably purchased at the higher exchange rate and as such can’t practically be marked down to reflect the current situation without someone suffering a loss. However, it does fail to answer the question as to why NEW books hitting the shelves still have that 30% disparity in pricing.
