Despite opinion to the contrary television does encourage reading, well sometimes anyway. The top two bestsellers on AbeBooks.com were assisted by national television syndication.

Oprah and her book club pushed Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth, which is of course the predecessor to World Without End and is not at all surprising.

The second bestselling title of the week, however, was a memoir written by Washington Post reporter and editor Walt Harrington in 2002. The book jumped back onto the bestselling charts when PBS ran the Emmy Award-winning documentary based on the memoir nationally on November 15, and was helped additionally when a number of newspapers plugged the airing.
